IDENTITY AFTER DEATH & CHOSEN FAMILY

Special Workbook for The Anarchist Death Project’s “The Paperwork of Dying”

A 46-page anarchist planning workbook for leaving a precise record of who you are, who your people are, what happens to your body, and how your identity is protected after death. Created by Fíona Vivienne in collaboration with High Noon Hills: Forest Restoration, Natural Burial Grounds & Conservation Cemeteries, and published by Bacchus Editions as part of the Parallel Deathcare Library.

Most people leave these instructions in fragments. Use my real name. Don't let my family take over. Keep this private. Don't put me in a church. This is who my people are. This person is never to touch my body. Then death arrives, and those fragments meet legal relatives, institutions, funeral homes, paperwork, habit, panic, and people suddenly claiming the right to decide.

Identity After Death & Chosen Family was made to leave something harder to erase. Across 46 pages of writing and working space, the workbook moves through name, pronouns and identity; chosen family and relationships; bodily presentation and care; who may see, touch or care for your body; privacy and photographs; and posthumous identity, including death announcements, obituaries and remembrances, cause and circumstances of death, grave and memorial inscriptions, and instructions for keeping a name, death or burial private.

It was made especially with the places ordinary death-planning documents tend to fail in mind: estranged biological families, anarchists, atheists in religious families, people living or publishing under names different from their legal names, deeply private people, queer and trans lives, chosen and poly families, and anyone whose actual life does not fit neatly inside the relationships and identities institutions agree to recognize.

Death does not make us available for revision.

The workbook makes an important distinction throughout it: writing down your wishes does not itself give the person you trust legal authority to defend them. It is designed to be used alongside the jurisdiction-specific appointments, directives and other paperwork collected in the Anarchist Death Project's free End-of-Life Forms: The Paperwork of Dying portal.
