The Sovereign Self was an American anarchist paper of egoist and individualist persuasion, devoted to the life ungoverned, uncontrolled, and to what its own masthead called “the full expression of the creative self.”

Its pages brought together essays, arguments, correspondence, poetry, polemic, et the wonderfully unruly concerns of a paper interested in the individual as something alive: autonomy, self-creation, love, sexuality, freedom, social convention, authority, and the possibilities of living beyond imposed moral and political forms.

The Sovereign Self was one of only three egoist-anarchist papers being published in the United States at the time, part of an extraordinarily small current within American individualist anarchism. Today, the paper is effectively inaccessible: there is no complete edition in circulation, and its full print run cannot be obtained or read as a body of work.

Bacchus Editions has brought The Sovereign Self back to life, as its contents are, in many ways, even more relevant today.

Bacchus Editions is bringing The Sovereign Self back into circulation in two forms.

First, we are printing the individual issues again. You will be able to buy The Sovereign Self‍ ‍much as you could when it was originally published: one issue at a time, to read, collect, pass along and keep.

The larger project is The Sovereign Self: The Anarchist Paper of Egoist and Individualist Persuasion, The Complete Print Run, a substantial Bacchus Editions Archive Edition, bringing the entire run together in a single volume, including the original inserts that accompanied the bulletin.

The Sovereign Self will be available as individual issues and, for the first time, as one complete body of work and we are damn excited about that.
