This Bacchus edition presents the complete work in English for the first time.
Far more than a translation, Reading Victor Roudine Reading Stirner surrounds Roudine's text with an extensive critical edition by Fíona Vivienne, including original essays, annotations, historical appendices, editorial notes, and archival materials that place both Roudine and Stirner back into the conversations of their own time.
Moving beyond biography and interpretation alone, the accompanying writings follow a recurring habit of mind through more than a century of Stirner's reception. Through readers as diverse as Victor Roudine, John Henry Mackay, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Émile Armand, Saul Newman, and others, the book examines the persistent tendency to recruit Stirner into philosophical and political projects he consistently refused to become. Rather than asking what Stirner can be made to represent, this edition asks a different question: what happens when readers need him to become something else?
