The Straight Line Never Existed; The First Complete English Translation of Ret Marut's 'Die Zerstörung unseres Welt-Systems durch die MAR-Kurve'
The first complete English translation of one of Ret Marut's most remarkable writings.
Long before the world knew him as B. Traven, Ret Marut published Die Zerstörung unseres Welt-Systems durch die MAR-Kurve in his extraordinary journal Der Ziegelbrenner. More than a century later, this remarkable work has remained largely inaccessible to English readers.
This Bacchus Editions volume presents, as far as we have been able to determine, the first complete English translation prepared directly from the original German publication, translated, edited, annotated and introduced by Fíona Vivienne.
At first glance the MAR-Kurve appears to concern mathematics, geometry, and cosmology. Before long those subjects quietly dissolve into something far more ambitious. Marut constructs an astonishing meditation on certainty, authority, reification, and the curious ease with which human beings mistake internally coherent systems for reality. The result is one of the most playful, unsettling and intellectually adventurous texts to emerge from Der Ziegelbrenner.
Rather than presenting the translation alone, this edition places the work within its historical and intellectual landscape through original essays, translator's notes, annotations, archival photographs, and bibliography. It is intended both for readers encountering Ret Marut for the first time and for those who have long travelled in the company of B. Traven, Max Stirner, Albert Libertad, Renzo Novatore, Georges Palante, Han Ryner, and many other old companions.
This edition includes:
• The first complete English translation of Die Zerstörung unseres Welt-Systems durch die MAR-Kurve
• A substantial historical introduction
• Essays on Marut, Der Ziegelbrenner, and the reception of the MAR-Kurve
• Translator's notes and annotations
• Bibliography
Proofed on a Vanderbilt 4, pressed on Heidelberg Windmill and perfect-bound in the classic French philosophical style with cream paper, restrained red typography, and Fraktur / Blackletter as a quiet nod to the original German edition.
Shipping begins approximately July 12, 2026.
